The Schutterij is a Dutch militia organization that was established in the 16th century. The name 'Schutterij' is derived from the Dutch word'schutters', meaning'shooters' or'marksmen'. The organization was formed as a response to the growing threat of Spanish and French invasion in the Low Countries during the Dutch Revolt.

The Schutterij was initially composed of volunteer militiamen who were tasked with defending their local communities from foreign attack and internal unrest. The militia was known for its adaptability and ability to respond quickly to changing circumstances. Members of the Schutterij were typically private citizens who were skilled in marksmanship and hand-to-hand combat.

In addition to their military duties, members of the Schutterij also performed ceremonial and civic functions within their communities. They often participated in public processions, armed processions, and other festivities. The Schutterij was also involved in the provision of charitable services, including soup kitchens, medical care, and other forms of assistance.

The Schutterij played a significant role in the Dutch struggle for independence in the 17th century. During the Eighty Years' War, Schutterij companies were instrumental in defending key cities and fortifications such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Leiden. The organization remained active throughout the 18th century, but its importance gradually declined with the establishment of a professionalized Dutch military.

Today, the term 'Schutterij' is still used in some parts of the Netherlands to refer to a group of local watchmen or town guards. However, the historical organization as a whole was disbanded in the late 18th century, with its functions and responsibilities being taken over by the Dutch army.
