Schule is the institution in German-speaking countries responsible for organized, formal education of children and adolescents. It provides structured learning across subjects such as language, mathematics, sciences, social studies, arts, and physical education, with the aim of developing knowledge, skills, and social competencies. Attendance is typically compulsory for a defined period.

In most German-speaking countries, education is organized in tiers. Primary education, such as Grundschule, usually lasts four years (ages 6 to 10 or 11). Secondary education is divided into tracks or pathways, such as Gymnasium (academic, with the Abitur as university entrance qualification), Realschule (intermediate-level qualification), Hauptschule (basic-level track), and Gesamtschule (comprehensive). Vocational education often combines schooling with apprenticeship at Berufsschulen. Completion of different tracks leads to various leaving certificates, including Abitur, Mittlere Reife, or vocational qualifications.

Governance of Schule is largely decentralized. In Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, education is typically the responsibility of states or cantons, with standardized curricula and examination requirements at the state level. The school year usually runs from late summer to late spring, with breaks depending on the region. Compulsory schooling (Schulpflicht) generally lasts from ages around 6 to 15–18, depending on jurisdiction.

Historical roots extend to medieval monasteries and cathedral schools; modern compulsory education was shaped by 18th- and 19th-century reforms in many countries, notably in Prussia. Today, schools increasingly emphasize inclusion, digital learning, and lifelong learning, alongside debates about funding, performance, and the balance between academic and vocational trajectories.
