Schistocitelor refers to fragmented red blood cells, also known as schistocytes. These are irregularly shaped red blood cells that have been damaged as they pass through the circulatory system. Their formation is often a sign of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, a condition where red blood cells are destroyed in small blood vessels.
The mechanical shearing forces within narrowed or damaged blood vessels can cause red blood cells to fragment.
The presence of schistocytes in a blood smear is a significant finding for clinicians. It indicates that
