Schistocitelor

Schistocitelor refers to fragmented red blood cells, also known as schistocytes. These are irregularly shaped red blood cells that have been damaged as they pass through the circulatory system. Their formation is often a sign of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, a condition where red blood cells are destroyed in small blood vessels.

The mechanical shearing forces within narrowed or damaged blood vessels can cause red blood cells to fragment. This can occur in various medical conditions, including disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), and severe infections. Certain heart valve abnormalities or artificial heart valves can also lead to schistocyte formation due to abnormal blood flow.

The presence of schistocytes in a blood smear is a significant finding for clinicians. It indicates that red blood cells are being destroyed prematurely, leading to anemia. Diagnosis and management of the underlying cause are crucial when schistocytes are identified. Treatment typically involves addressing the specific condition responsible for the red blood cell fragmentation.
