A schijfgranulator, also known as a pan granulator or disc granulator, is a piece of industrial equipment used in the process of granulation. Granulation is a process of particle enlargement where small particles are agglomerated into larger, more manageable granules. This is particularly useful in industries such as fertilizer production, chemical manufacturing, and food processing, where handling fine powders can be difficult due to dusting, poor flowability, or inconsistency.

The schijfgranulator consists of a rotating disc, typically set at an angle. Material to be granulated is fed onto the disc. Water or a binding agent is sprayed onto the material as it tumbles. The rotation of the disc and the addition of the liquid cause the fine particles to adhere to each other, forming larger agglomerates or granules. The angle of the disc and the speed of rotation can be adjusted to control the size and quality of the granules produced.

As the disc rotates, the material is continuously moved outwards towards the edge. The granules that reach a desired size are then discharged from the edge of the disc, while smaller particles are retained on the disc for further agglomeration. This continuous process allows for high throughput. The resulting granules are generally spherical or hemispherical in shape and are uniform in size, making them easier to transport, store, and process in subsequent stages. The design of the schijfgranulator is relatively simple, making it a robust and reliable piece of equipment for granulation operations.
