Schandkelders, meaning "shame cellars" in German, were a type of punishment device used historically in parts of the Holy Roman Empire and some German-speaking regions. These were typically small, damp, and dark underground cells or dungeons where individuals were confined as a form of corporal punishment and public humiliation. The conditions were deliberately harsh, often lacking basic amenities and designed to inflict discomfort and shame upon the offender.

The purpose of a schandkeller was twofold: to punish the individual and to deter others from similar offenses through public spectacle and the known severity of the punishment. Offenders might be placed in these cells for a set period, sometimes with minimal food or water. While not a form of capital punishment, it represented a significant social and physical ordeal. The use of schandkelders declined with the rise of more modern penal systems and a shift in attitudes towards punishment, with their usage largely ceasing by the 18th or 19th century in most areas. Their existence reflects a historical approach to justice that emphasized public shaming and harsh physical conditions.
