This phenomenon is influenced by a variety of factors related to the odorant molecules themselves and the surrounding conditions.

The chemical properties of the odorant are paramount. Volatile compounds, which easily evaporate into the air, tend to have shorter scent lengths. Conversely, less volatile or heavier molecules may linger for longer periods. The concentration of the odorant also plays a role; a strong initial scent will naturally be perceptible for a greater duration than a faint one.

Environmental factors significantly impact scent length. Temperature and humidity can affect the rate of evaporation and the diffusion of odorant molecules. Air movement, such as wind or ventilation, can disperse scents, reducing their perceived duration in a specific location. The nature of the surface on which the scent is deposited is also relevant; porous materials might absorb and slowly release odorants, extending their scent length, while smooth, non-porous surfaces might allow for quicker dissipation.
