This contrasts with parallel transmission, where multiple bits are sent simultaneously over separate channels. Serial communication is characterized by its simplicity and cost-effectiveness, requiring fewer wires and connectors compared to parallel systems.

The fundamental principle involves encoding data into a stream of bits, which are then transmitted in order. At the receiving end, these bits are reassembled into the original data. Common examples of serial buses include Universal Serial Bus (USB), Serial ATA (SATA), and Ethernet. These technologies have become ubiquitous in modern computing and electronics, enabling communication between a vast array of devices.

Advantages of serial bus technology include reduced cabling complexity, lower electromagnetic interference, and the ability to achieve higher data rates over longer distances compared to many parallel implementations.
