Sannolikhetsnivå, often translated as probability level or significance level, is a crucial concept in statistical hypothesis testing. It represents the threshold at which a statistical result is deemed unlikely to have occurred by random chance alone. In simpler terms, it's the risk we are willing to take of incorrectly rejecting a true null hypothesis.

This level is typically denoted by the Greek letter alpha (α) and is commonly set at 0.05, or 5%. This means that if the observed result is so extreme that it would occur less than 5% of the time under the assumption that the null hypothesis is true, we reject the null hypothesis in favor of the alternative hypothesis.

A lower sannolikhetsnivå, such as 0.01 (1%), indicates a stricter requirement for evidence. This reduces the chance of a Type I error (falsely rejecting a true null hypothesis) but increases the risk of a Type II error (failing to reject a false null hypothesis). Conversely, a higher sannolikhetsnivå, like 0.10 (10%), makes it easier to reject the null hypothesis, increasing the risk of a Type I error. The choice of sannolikhetsnivå depends on the context of the study and the consequences of making either type of error.
