In linguistic or terminological work, samræmding can mean harmonizing terminology, spellings, or classifications to support clear communication.

The process typically includes comparing existing practices, identifying variances, and building consensus on a common approach. Next comes formal adoption or alignment of standards, followed by implementation, monitoring, and periodic revision to reflect new developments.

Benefits include greater legal certainty, easier cross-border trade and cooperation, improved safety and quality, and reduced costs from avoiding duplicated work. Challenges include negotiating national or organizational sovereignty, resource requirements for reform, evolving standards, and ensuring ongoing compliance and updates.
