Saltutläggare refers to the equipment or personnel responsible for distributing de-icing salt on roads during winter to prevent ice formation and improve traction. In Sweden and other Nordic countries, saltutläggare are part of municipal and regional winter maintenance fleets. The term combines salt and utläggare, one who lays out or spreads material.

Most saltutläggare are mounted on road maintenance vehicles, such as snow plows or dedicated spreaders. They can be front- or rear-mounted, with a hopper feeding a conveyor or auger and a spinner disc that distributes salt onto the road. They spread rock salt, salt brine, or pre-wetted salt mixes; some systems are designed to apply anti-icing solutions before frost or light snow events.

Operation depends on weather data, air and road temperature, traffic, and road category. Operators calibrate spread rate to vehicle speed and the planned maintenance route; higher-speed roads receive broader coverage. Pre-wetting and brine are increasingly common to improve adhesion, reduce dust, and limit salt loss in windy conditions. Environmental considerations drive careful budgeting and the exploration of alternatives when feasible.

Maintenance and safety are essential. Regular calibration ensures even distribution; routine checks include hopper and conveyor integrity, spinner wear, and blockage prevention. Training is typically provided as part of municipal winter-service procedures, with guidelines for timing and scope of salting to balance safety, cost, and environmental impact.
