Salmonella is a genus of bacteria that can cause illness in humans and animals. These rod-shaped, Gram-negative bacteria are commonly found in the intestines of birds, reptiles, and mammals. While many Salmonella strains are harmless commensals, a significant number are pathogenic, leading to a disease known as salmonellosis.

Salmonellosis is typically contracted through the consumption of contaminated food or water. Common sources of contamination include undercooked poultry, eggs, dairy products, and produce that has come into contact with animal feces. The bacteria can also be transmitted from person to person through poor hygiene practices.

Symptoms of salmonellosis usually appear between 6 and 72 hours after infection and can include diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, and vomiting. In most healthy individuals, the illness is self-limiting and resolves within a few days without specific treatment. However, in certain populations, such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis can lead to more severe complications, including dehydration and bloodstream infections, which may require hospitalization.

Prevention of Salmonella infection primarily involves safe food handling practices. This includes thorough cooking of animal products, avoiding cross-contamination between raw and cooked foods, and practicing good hand hygiene. Prompt medical attention is recommended for individuals experiencing severe symptoms or those in high-risk groups.
