Sairausvuotoja is a Finnish term used in some clinical and lay contexts to refer to abnormal discharges that accompany illness. The term is not a formal diagnosis in official medical guidelines. It combines sairaus (illness) and vuotoja (discharges), and is usually used descriptively rather than to define a single condition.

The phenomenon covers several types of discharges that can occur during illness, including nasal or sinus discharge during respiratory infections, ocular discharge during conjunctivitis, wound drainage, and other area-specific discharges. These discharges are typically transient and related to immune response or local tissue inflammation.

Causes are diverse and include viral or bacterial infections, allergic inflammation, obstruction, foreign bodies, and secondary bacterial infection. In some cases, discharges may indicate more serious conditions requiring medical attention, such as persistent fever, severe pain, or signs of systemic infection.

Diagnosis is usually based on clinical observation and patient history; laboratory testing such as cultures or PCR may be used to identify causative pathogens when appropriate. Management focuses on treating the underlying illness and relieving symptoms; measures may include saline irrigation, wound care, adequate hydration, rest, and, when bacterial infection is suspected, antibiotics prescribed by a clinician.
