Süntesaattorit, commonly referred to as synthesizers, are electronic musical instruments that generate audio signals. These signals are then manipulated to create a wide range of sounds, from imitations of traditional instruments to entirely new sonic textures. Unlike acoustic instruments that produce sound through physical vibration, synthesizers rely on electronic circuits and digital signal processing to create their sound.

The core of a synthesizer lies in its oscillators, which produce the fundamental waveforms. These waveforms, such as sine, sawtooth, and square waves, are then shaped by various modules. A filter is a crucial component, allowing users to alter the harmonic content of the sound, effectively brightening or darkening it. An envelope generator controls how a sound evolves over time, dictating its attack, decay, sustain, and release (ADSR). Other common modules include amplifiers, which control the volume, and low-frequency oscillators (LFOs), used to create modulation effects like vibrato or tremolo.

Synthesizers can be broadly categorized into analog and digital types. Analog synthesizers use physical electronic components to generate and process sound, often prized for their warmth and organic character. Digital synthesizers, on the other hand, employ computer algorithms and digital signal processing, offering greater precision, versatility, and the ability to store and recall patches. Modern synthesizers often combine elements of both analog and digital technology. They play a significant role in various music genres, including electronic dance music, pop, rock, and film scoring.
