Sähkönvaihto refers to the process of changing your electricity supplier in Finland. This is a consumer's right and is intended to promote competition within the energy market, potentially leading to better prices and service for customers. The process is regulated and designed to be straightforward for the consumer.

To initiate a sähkönvaihto, a customer typically selects a new electricity supplier based on factors such as price, contract terms, and the origin of the electricity (e.g., renewable energy sources). Once a new supplier is chosen and a contract is signed, the new supplier handles the necessary arrangements with the old supplier and the local grid company. This typically involves a notification period, often around two weeks, after which the electricity supply will be transferred to the new provider.

During the switch, there is no interruption in electricity supply. The physical electricity grid remains the same; only the company responsible for billing and purchasing the electricity changes. Consumers are encouraged to compare offers from different electricity companies to find the most suitable contract for their needs.
