Rügyezés is a horticultural technique used to propagate plants. It involves grafting a single bud from a desirable plant onto the rootstock of another, usually a more robust or disease-resistant variety. This method is often preferred over other grafting techniques because it requires less material from the scion (the bud source) and can be performed when the bark of the rootstock is "slipping," meaning it can be easily separated from the wood.

There are several common types of rügyezés, including T-budding and chip budding. T-budding, named for the shape of the incision made in the rootstock, is widely used for fruit trees and roses. Chip budding involves removing a small chip of bark and wood from the rootstock and replacing it with a similarly shaped bud piece. The success of rügyezés depends on several factors, such as the compatibility between the scion and rootstock, the health of both components, and proper technique to ensure good contact between the cambium layers. After the bud is inserted, it is typically wrapped tightly with grafting tape or rubber strips to hold it in place and prevent drying until the union has healed. Rügyezés allows for the efficient propagation of plants with desirable traits, such as fruit quality or flower color, onto hardy root systems.
