Røggasrensning, also known as flue gas desulfurization (FGD) or exhaust gas purification, refers to a series of industrial processes designed to remove harmful pollutants from the exhaust gases produced by combustion in industrial facilities and power plants. The primary goal of røggasrensning is to reduce air pollution and mitigate its environmental impact, particularly concerning acid rain and respiratory health.

The most common pollutants targeted by røggasrensning are sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter, and heavy metals. SO2 is a major contributor to acid rain, while NOx can lead to smog and respiratory problems. Particulate matter, or soot, can also have detrimental effects on human health and visibility.
