Rörelseuppskattning, also known as motion estimation, is a fundamental process in digital image and video processing. It involves determining the movement of objects or pixels between consecutive frames in a video sequence. The primary goal is to represent the motion efficiently, typically by identifying a motion vector for each block of pixels. This motion vector indicates the displacement of the block from one frame to the next.

The process typically works by dividing an image frame into small blocks, often of size 8x8 or 16x16 pixels. For each block in the current frame (the reference frame), the algorithm searches for the best matching block in a neighboring region of the next frame (the search frame). The "best match" is usually determined by minimizing a cost function, such as the sum of absolute differences (SAD) or the sum of squared differences (SSD) between the pixel values of the blocks. The displacement that yields the best match is recorded as the motion vector for that block.

By predicting the movement of image content, it allows encoders to transmit only the differences between frames, significantly reducing the amount of data required to represent the video.
