Röntgenoptiikka, often translated as X-ray optics, is a specialized field within optics that deals with the manipulation and control of X-rays. Unlike visible light, X-rays have much shorter wavelengths, typically ranging from 0.01 to 10 nanometers, and higher energies. This difference in wavelength and energy means that traditional optical components like lenses and mirrors used for visible light are generally ineffective for X-rays. X-rays interact with matter differently, exhibiting properties like high penetration and a tendency to be absorbed rather than reflected by most materials at normal incidence.

The development of X-ray optics has enabled significant advancements in various scientific and technological areas. X-ray optics aims to focus, collimate, and shape X-ray beams for applications such as X-ray microscopy, X-ray astronomy, and high-resolution X-ray imaging. Special techniques and materials are required for X-ray optical elements. For instance, X-rays can be reflected at very shallow grazing angles from smooth surfaces. This principle is utilized in grazing-incidence mirrors, which are crucial for focusing X-rays in applications where high spatial resolution is needed.

Another important area in X-ray optics is the development of diffractive optics, such as Fresnel zone plates. These structures use diffraction to focus X-rays and can achieve very small focal spot sizes. Furthermore, X-ray optics encompasses the study of X-ray detectors and their interaction with X-ray photons, which is essential for imaging and analysis. The ongoing research in X-ray optics continues to push the boundaries of resolution and sensitivity in X-ray-based technologies, opening new possibilities for scientific discovery and medical diagnostics.
