Röntgen's initial experiments demonstrated their ability to penetrate soft tissues but be absorbed by denser materials like bone, leading to their immediate application in medical imaging.

The production of X-rays typically involves accelerating electrons to high speeds and then rapidly decelerating them when they strike a metal target. This process, known as bremsstrahlung, generates a spectrum of X-ray energies. X-rays are used extensively in medical diagnostics to visualize internal structures of the body, such as bones, organs, and foreign objects. They are also employed in industrial radiography for inspecting materials, in security screening at airports, and in scientific research for analyzing the structure of crystals.

While highly beneficial, prolonged or excessive exposure to X-rays can be harmful due to their ionizing nature, which can damage biological tissues and increase the risk of cancer. Therefore, medical and industrial uses of X-rays are carefully regulated, and protective measures are implemented to minimize radiation exposure. The development of digital radiography has further enhanced the precision and reduced the radiation dose required for diagnostic imaging.
