Rökfræðinnar is the Icelandic word for logic, the systematic study of valid reasoning and inference. It explores the principles that govern correct thinking and aims to distinguish sound arguments from fallacious ones. Logic is concerned with the structure of arguments, not necessarily with the truth of their premises. A logically valid argument is one where if the premises are true, the conclusion must also be true.

There are two main branches of logic: deductive logic and inductive logic. Deductive logic moves from general principles to specific conclusions. For example, "All men are mortal. Socrates is a man. Therefore, Socrates is mortal." If the premises are true, the conclusion is guaranteed to be true. Inductive logic, on the other hand, moves from specific observations to broader generalizations. For instance, observing that every swan you've ever seen is white might lead to the conclusion that all swans are white. However, this conclusion is probable, not certain, as evidenced by the existence of black swans.

Logic finds application in various fields, including mathematics, philosophy, computer science, linguistics, and even everyday decision-making. It provides a framework for analyzing complex problems, constructing persuasive arguments, and identifying errors in reasoning. Understanding the principles of logic is crucial for critical thinking and for engaging in clear and coherent discourse. Different logical systems exist, such as propositional logic, predicate logic, and modal logic, each with its own set of rules and expressive power.
