Rézkarbonátok are inorganic chemical compounds that contain copper and carbonate ions. The most well-known and common example is malachite, which has the chemical formula Cu2(OH)2CO3. Another significant copper carbonate is azurite, with the formula Cu3(OH)2(CO3)2. These compounds are typically found as secondary minerals in the oxidation zones of copper deposits.

Malachite is characterized by its vibrant green color and often forms in botryoidal, fibrous, or stalactitic masses. Its name derives from the Greek word "malache," meaning mallow, referring to its resemblance to the color of the mallow leaf. Azurite, on the other hand, displays a striking deep blue color and is also found in similar geological environments. It is named after the Persian word "lazhward," meaning blue.

Both malachite and azurite have been used for centuries as pigments in paints and cosmetics due to their distinctive colors. Malachite has also been employed in jewelry and ornamental objects. Chemically, copper carbonates are relatively insoluble in water but can react with acids to release carbon dioxide. They are important in understanding the weathering processes of copper-bearing rocks and in the biogeochemical cycling of copper.
