Retegej a geological term used in Hungary to describe isolated rock formations that rise dramatically from the surrounding flatter landscape. These formations are typically made of hard, erosion-resistant rock, such as limestone or volcanic tuff, which has withstood the weathering and erosion processes that have worn down the softer surrounding material over millions of years. The term "reteg" translates to "layer" in Hungarian, and "szigetek" means "islands," aptly describing these formations that appear as rocky islands in a sea of plains.

The formation of retegej is a result of differential erosion. Over geological time, tectonic uplift may have brought layers of varying hardness to the surface. Subsequent erosion by wind, water, and ice has preferentially removed the softer rock layers, leaving the harder, more resistant ones standing. In some cases, volcanic activity has also played a role, with eruptions depositing layers of tuff that later became isolated through erosion.

These formations are often found in the Pannonian Basin, which forms the bulk of Hungary. They can vary significantly in size, from small outcrops to large, imposing hills. Retegej are of significant geological interest, providing insights into the region's past geological history, including ancient seas, volcanic activity, and erosion patterns. They also contribute to the unique biodiversity of the areas they inhabit, as their distinct microclimates and terrains support specialized flora and fauna. Many retegej are protected natural heritage sites in Hungary.
