Récitations are verbal performances in which a text is read aloud from memory or from a prepared script. In education, it denotes the practice of memorizing and delivering poetry, prose, or speeches, typically in front of a teacher or audience. The activity has deep historical roots in classical pedagogy and remains a standard feature of many Francophone educational systems, alongside reading and writing.

Historically, recitation was central to instruction in antiquity and continued through medieval and early modern schooling, with pupils expected to memorize passages in Latin or vernacular languages. In France and other Francophone countries, récitation became a formal pedagogical exercise in the 18th–20th centuries, used to train memory, diction, and rhetorical expression. Today it persists in schools, conservatories, and cultural associations, and is also practiced as a public oratory competition known as a concours de récitation.

Formats vary: texts may be poems, fables, short excerpts from literature, or scenes from plays. Performances may be solo or in groups, and may involve expressive elements such as voice projection, rhythm, phrasing, and gesture. Assessment usually focuses on memory, pronunciation, articulation, tempo, intelligibility, emotional engagement, and fidelity to the text.

Beyond education, récitations appear in theatre, liturgical and religious contexts, and in everyday language as the act of reciting prayers or formulaic texts. The practice remains a vehicle for language mastery, cultural transmission, and public speaking, though it has faced critiques that emphasize memorization over comprehension and expressive interpretation.
