Ryggsøylets is a term that refers to the vertebral column, commonly known as the spine. It is a complex structure composed of a series of bones called vertebrae, stacked one upon another. These vertebrae protect the spinal cord, which is a crucial part of the central nervous system. Below the lumbar spine are the sacrum and the coccyx, which are fused vertebrae at the base of the spine.

Between most of the vertebrae are intervertebral discs, which act as shock absorbers and allow for flexibility.
