Ruoansulatusjärjestelmä, also known as the digestive system, is a complex network of organs and processes responsible for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating waste in the human body. It begins with the mouth, where food is ingested and initially broken down by mechanical and chemical processes. The esophagus then transports the food to the stomach, where it is further mixed with digestive juices and churned by muscular contractions. From the stomach, the partially digested food, known as chyme, moves into the small intestine, where most nutrient absorption occurs. The small intestine is divided into three parts: the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. The large intestine, or colon, follows the small intestine and is responsible for absorbing water and electrolytes from the remaining waste material. Finally, the rectum temporarily stores waste before it is eliminated from the body through the anus. The digestive system is supported by various hormones and enzymes that regulate digestion and nutrient absorption. Disorders of the digestive system can range from mild discomfort to life-threatening conditions, and proper nutrition and regular exercise are essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system.
