The operation of a fuel injection system involves several key components. A fuel pump supplies pressurized fuel from the tank. Fuel injectors, electronically controlled by the engine control unit (ECU), spray the fuel. Sensors throughout the engine monitor various parameters such as engine speed, temperature, throttle position, and air flow. The ECU processes this information and precisely controls the timing and amount of fuel injected by each injector.

The advantages of fuel injection systems over carburetors are significant. They offer better fuel atomization, leading to more complete combustion. This results in increased horsepower, improved torque, and better fuel economy. Furthermore, fuel injection systems are crucial for meeting modern emissions standards by allowing for precise control over the fuel-air ratio, which directly impacts exhaust gas composition. While initially more complex and expensive, fuel injection has become the standard in virtually all new gasoline and diesel engines due to its superior performance and environmental benefits.
