Ruderal is a term used in ecology to describe plants that colonize disturbed ground. These plants are typically opportunistic, fast-growing, and short-lived, often found in areas where the natural vegetation has been removed or damaged. Such disturbances can include construction sites, abandoned fields, roadsides, and even areas affected by natural events like fires or landslides.

Ruderal species are well-adapted to these unstable environments. They often have high seed production, efficient seed dispersal mechanisms, and the ability to germinate rapidly. Their life cycles are frequently short, allowing them to complete their reproduction before competition from slower-growing, perennial species becomes too intense. Examples of common ruderal plants include various species of weeds, such as dandelion and ragweed, as well as certain types of grasses and wildflowers.

The presence of ruderal vegetation can indicate the degree of human impact or recent natural disturbance in an ecosystem. While some may view them as undesirable weeds, they play an important ecological role by stabilizing soil, preventing erosion, and providing early food sources for insects and other wildlife in disturbed areas. As succession progresses, more established plant communities typically outcompete and replace ruderal species.
