A key application is in metrology: rubidium-87 atoms are used in compact atomic clocks, providing precise frequency standards. Rubidium-82, obtained from strontium-82 decay, is used as a radiotracer in positron emission tomography imaging for cardiac studies. Rubidium-doped glass and ceramics serve in certain optical or magnetic applications, and rubidium ions are used as research probes in biochemistry and physiology. In physics, rubidium vapors are used in magneto-optical traps and quantum optics experiments.
