Routakato is a Finnish term referring to a frost heave trench. It is a natural phenomenon that occurs in cold climates where water in the soil freezes, expands, and lifts the ground upwards. This lifting action can cause significant damage to structures built on or near the affected area, such as roads, foundations, and pipelines.

The process of frost heave involves several stages. First, water must be present in the soil. Sandy and gravelly soils are less susceptible to frost heave because water drains easily. However, fine-grained soils like clay and silt can retain moisture, making them more prone to this phenomenon. Second, the temperature must drop below freezing, causing the water in the soil to turn into ice. As the ice forms, it expands, pushing the soil upwards. In some cases, continuous layers of ice can form, creating a substantial lifting force.

The effects of routakato can be severe. Paved surfaces can crack and buckle, requiring costly repairs. Foundations of buildings can become uneven, leading to structural instability. Pipelines buried underground can be damaged, causing leaks or breaks. The extent of routakato depends on factors such as soil type, moisture content, the depth of the frost penetration, and the duration of freezing temperatures.
