Rotativ is an adjective used in several languages to refer to anything that involves rotation or operates by rotating around an axis. In Romanian, for example, rotativ describes devices or motions characterized by rotation; in French, rotatif has a similar meaning. The term derives from Latin rotativus, from rotatio meaning rotation. In English, the form rotative is used but mainly in technical contexts, with rotating or rotary being more common.

In engineering, rotativ components include rotary motors (electric motors with a rotating shaft), rotary encoders that produce signals proportional to angular position, rotary switches that select circuits by turning a knob, and rotor assemblies in turbines and engines. Many mechanical assemblies employ rotating parts such as gears, shafts, and housings that support and guide rotation. In manufacturing, rotating drums or cylinders are used in processes like coating, drying, or printing. In electronics, disk drives and other data-storage devices contain rotative elements.

In physics and applied mechanics, rotational motion is analyzed in terms of angular position, velocity, and acceleration, with the moment of inertia quantifying resistance to changes in rotation. Problems involve balancing, lubrication, and bearing design to minimize wear and vibration.
