Root Sum of Squares, also known as Root Sum Squared, is a statistical method used to quantify the variability of a dataset. It is commonly employed in quality control and engineering applications where parts performance can vary due to different factors. The calculation sums up the squares of the standardized values of the root causes for each factor, hence the name.

The process starts with identifying the possible root causes of part performance variation on a small scale. These causes can include material properties, environmental conditions, and design parameters, among others. Once identified, these root causes are then converted to their standardized values using appropriate techniques such as heat treatment, ion implantation, or chemical treatment when dealing with material properties.

Next, the influence of these standardized factor values on part performance is assessed. In this step, the variability contribution of each root cause, also referred to as its impact or influence, is determined. This influence varies depending on the property being measured, and in some cases may be related to the part design. After each impact is determined, it is then squared to obtain the squared impact.

The final step is the summation of these squared impacts to get the Root Sum of Squares (RSS). The value obtained from this total represents a measure of the combined variability of the part under various conditions. This metric therefore gives an indicative figure of the level of quality to be expected in a product where each factor's root cause is allowed to vary normally or within specified tolerances.
