Rootsif is a term used in plant biology to describe a putative class of root-derived signaling factors that mediate communication between plant roots and the surrounding soil environment, including symbiotic microbes, as well as interactions among neighboring roots. The term is not universally standardized and appears in a range of formulations in the rhizosphere literature. In common usage, rootsif denotes molecules released by roots that influence signaling pathways in roots and in associated microbes, thereby modulating nodulation, mycorrhizal establishment, root architecture, and defense responses.

Biochemical nature and detection: Rootsif signals are not anchored to a single molecular class; proposed representatives include small peptides, lipidic compounds, small RNAs, and secondary metabolites. No single structure is universally accepted, and detection relies on bioassays coupled with omics approaches, as well as plant- or microbe-specific responses such as changes in gene expression, calcium signaling, or colonization levels.

Mechanisms and effects: Rootsif candidates are thought to be perceived by receptor-like kinases or other pattern-recognition components in the root, triggering downstream signaling cascades that integrate hormonal pathways (auxin, jasmonate, abscisic acid) and defense networks. The net effect can be promotion of symbiosis (nodulation or mycorrhization), modification of root architecture, or modulation of immune responses, depending on context.

Applications and status: Research on rootsif aims to harness root communication to improve nutrient uptake and stress resilience. However, findings vary by species and experimental conditions, and methodological standardization remains a challenge.
