Rootorile is the Romanian term commonly used for rotors, the rotating parts at the heart of many machines. They are responsible for converting electrical energy into mechanical energy or for transmitting rotational power between shafts. Rotors appear in electric machines such as motors and generators, as well as in turbomachinery like turbines and flywheels.

Electric-machine rotors come in several designs. Squirrel-cage rotors consist of laminated iron with bars shorted by end rings, while wound-rotor types use windings connected to slip rings. Synchronous machines may employ salient-pole rotors or cylindrical rotors, and modern designs often incorporate permanent magnets. Laminations reduce eddy currents and improve efficiency. In flywheels and other energy-storage devices, rotors are mass-focused disks designed for rotational stability and specific inertia characteristics.

Function and dynamics: The rotor interacts with the stator’s magnetic field in electric machines to generate torque or electricity. In turbines, the rotor carries the blades and transmits energy from a moving fluid to a shaft. Rotor balance, vibration, temperature, lubrication, and bearing condition all affect performance and reliability. Material selection and cooling methods are important for high-speed or high-load operation.

Applications and maintenance: Rotors are central to power plants, industrial drives, wind turbines, aerospace propulsion, and precision equipment. Regular inspection covers bearing wear, shaft bow, rotor balancing, and, in permanent-m magnet rotors, magnet integrity.
