Rivitaloasuminen, also known as townhouse living, is a housing format common in Finland and other Nordic countries. It represents a middle ground between detached houses and apartment buildings, offering a unique blend of privacy and community. In a rivitalo, several dwellings are joined together in a row, sharing common walls but typically having their own separate entrance, yard, and often a small sauna.

The ownership structure of a rivitalo can vary. Some are owned by a single entity, such as a housing company (asunto-osakeyhtiö), where residents own shares in the company and thus the right to occupy a specific dwelling. In other cases, individual dwellings might be owned outright, with shared responsibility for common areas and maintenance. This shared responsibility is a key aspect of rivitalo living, as residents often collaborate on upkeep of shared grounds and resolve community matters.

A significant advantage of rivitaloasuminen is the perceived balance it strikes. Residents enjoy a greater degree of personal space and freedom compared to apartment living, with the ability to garden, barbecue, or simply enjoy their own outdoor area. Simultaneously, the proximity to neighbors fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility, which can be beneficial for security and social interaction. Maintenance costs and efforts are also often distributed among residents, making it a potentially more affordable and manageable option than owning a detached house. However, it also requires a degree of compromise and cooperation with neighbors, as shared walls mean some level of noise can transfer between units.
