Riviliitokset, often translated as "rivet joints" or "riveted connections," are a method of permanently joining two or more pieces of material, typically metal, by using rivets. A rivet is a mechanical fastener, consisting of a smooth cylindrical shaft with a head on one end and, on the other, a tail that is formed to become the second head (the bucked tail). In a typical riveting process, a hole is drilled or punched through the parts to be joined, and a rivet is inserted. The tail of the rivet is then deformed, usually by hammering or pressing, to create a second head, effectively clamping the parts together.

This technique was historically very common in the construction of bridges, buildings, ships, and aircraft before the widespread adoption of welding and bolted connections. Rivets provide a strong and durable joint, capable of withstanding significant shear and tensile forces. They were particularly advantageous in situations where welding was difficult or impossible, such as on-site construction or when joining dissimilar metals. The process of riveting, especially the hammering of hot rivets, was a distinctive sound in industrial settings.

While less prevalent in modern manufacturing due to advancements in other joining technologies, riveted connections are still used in certain applications where their specific properties are beneficial. These include some structural engineering projects, historical restorations, and specific aerospace applications where a proven, robust, and inspectable joint is required. The visual appearance of rivet heads can also be a design element in some products and architectural features.
