Riskinottohalukkuutta, or willingness to take risk, describes the extent to which a person is prepared to engage in uncertain decisions or actions to pursue potential gains. It is a core concept in psychology and behavioral economics and is related to but distinct from risk tolerance (how much risk one accepts) and risk attitude (a general predisposition toward risk).

Assessment typically combines self-report scales that rate risk propensity across domains with behavioural tasks that observe choices under uncertainty, such as lotteries or risk-taking experiments. Researchers distinguish domain-general risk taking from domain-specific risk taking (for example financial or social risks).

Determinants include personality traits, especially openness to experience and extraversion, as well as age, gender, culture, and socioeconomic context. Mood, perceived control, incentives, and cognitive load can cause short-term fluctuations in expressed risk willingness.

Practical relevance spans finance, entrepreneurship, health communication, and policy. Higher willingness to take risks can support innovation and investment but also raise the chance of losses, while lower willingness can limit growth or risk management decisions.

Limitations include variation in measurement across studies, cultural differences, and domain or time-specific fluctuations. Ongoing research seeks to clarify how risk willingness interacts with cognition, emotion, and context in decision making.
