Ringwraith is a fictional character in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium, appearing in The Lord of the Rings. The character is also known as Black Rider. There are nine Ringwraiths, but only six are directly involved in the story of The Lord of the Rings.

The Ringwraiths, also referred to as Nazgûl, were once human kings of the same land who, under the influence of the Dark Lord Sauron, survived and were corrupted into powerful servants. They are described as being dressed in black robes, with hoods that conceal their faces, and are mounted on dark-hued steeds. The Ringwraiths serve as the primary agents of Sauron, carrying out his will and enforcing his power in Middle-earth.

One of the characteristics of the Ringwraiths is their ability to recapture and enslave others who have attempted to destroy the One Ring. They possess magical powers, including the ability to perceive the location of objects imbued with the Ring's power. The Ringwraiths are led by the Witch-king of Angmar, who is the most powerful of the nine and serves as Sauron's most trusted servant.

During the course of The Lord of the Rings, the Ringwraiths are involved in several key events, including the battle of Helm's Deep and the fight at Minas Tirith. They are eventually defeated at the Battle of the Morannon, allowing the Free Peoples of Middle-earth to ultimately triumph over Sauron's forces.
