Rikkihiiltä is the Finnish word for carbon disulfide. It is a colorless, volatile liquid with the chemical formula CS2. Carbon disulfide is a highly flammable and toxic compound. Historically, carbon disulfide was used in the production of viscose rayon and cellophane. It served as a solvent and a reagent in various chemical processes. Skin contact can cause irritation and dermatitis. Long-term exposure has been linked to cardiovascular problems and damage to the nervous system. Due to its toxicity, strict safety precautions are necessary when handling carbon disulfide, including adequate ventilation and personal protective equipment. Its environmental impact is also a concern, as it can contribute to air pollution.
