Riimuja is a Finnish word that translates to "runes" or "runic letters." Historically, it refers to the letters of the Elder Futhark, the oldest runic alphabet used by Germanic peoples. These symbols were not only used for writing but also held significant symbolic and magical meaning for ancient cultures.

The use of runes, or riimuja, dates back to at least the 2nd century CE. They were carved into various materials such as stone, wood, metal, and bone, often for inscriptions on monuments, weapons, jewelry, and amulets. Each rune had a name and a phonetic value, and many were associated with deities, natural phenomena, or abstract concepts, imbuing them with deeper significance beyond mere linguistic function.
