Riftzóna is a term used to describe a geological region characterized by significant tectonic activity, specifically stretching and thinning of the Earth's crust. This process leads to the formation of faults and grabens, which are down-dropped blocks of land bounded by faults. Rift zones are often associated with volcanism and earthquakes as magma rises from the mantle to the surface and tectonic plates pull apart.

These zones can develop both on continents, forming continental rift zones, and in the oceans, contributing to the creation of new oceanic crust at mid-ocean ridges. Continental rift zones, if they continue to develop, can eventually evolve into new ocean basins. The East African Rift Valley is a prime example of an active continental rift zone.
