Riebaliniai, also known as adipose tissue, is a type of connective tissue composed of adipocytes. These specialized cells are primarily responsible for storing energy in the form of fat, although they also play roles in insulation and cushioning. Adipose tissue is found throughout the body and can be classified into two main types: white adipose tissue and brown adipose tissue.

White adipose tissue is the most common type and its primary function is energy storage. It stores fat in a single large droplet within the adipocyte. This tissue also provides insulation, protecting the body from cold, and acts as a shock absorber, protecting vital organs. White adipose tissue is distributed subcutaneously (under the skin) and viscerally (around organs).

Brown adipose tissue, in contrast, is specialized for thermogenesis, or heat production. Its adipocytes contain numerous small fat droplets and a high concentration of mitochondria, which are responsible for generating heat when metabolized. Brown adipose tissue is particularly abundant in newborns and hibernating animals, helping them maintain body temperature in cold environments. In adult humans, it is found in smaller amounts, primarily in the neck and upper back. The amount of brown adipose tissue can vary between individuals and is influenced by factors such as age, temperature, and physical activity.
