Ribbonfishes are any species of fish in the family Trachipteridae. They are characterized by their exceptionally long, compressed, and ribbon-like bodies. Often silvery in color, these pelagic fish inhabit open ocean waters worldwide, from surface zones to mid-level depths.

A key identifying feature is a long, continuous dorsal fin that originates high on the head and runs the entire length of the body. Their anal fins and pelvic fins are usually small or vestigial. They have large eyes and a small, protrusible mouth, sometimes with sharp teeth.

Ribbonfishes are rarely encountered due to their deep-sea habitat, but they occasionally become stranded on beaches or are found near the surface, which has contributed to their mythical status as sea-serpents. The family contains several genera, including Trachipterus, Zu, and Desmodema, each with distinct species. Their biology and life history remain subjects of ongoing scientific study.
