Rhinoviruses are a genus of viruses that belong to the Picornaviridae family. These viruses are the primary cause of the common cold, responsible for 20-50% of all colds. There are three main species of rhinoviruses, designated as HRV-A, HRV-B, and HRV-C, with over 160 strains identified.

Rhinoviruses are highly contagious, transmitted through direct contact with an infected person's respiratory secretions or through airborne transmission when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The incubation period for rhinovirus infection ranges from 1-3 days after exposure. Symptoms typically begin within 1-4 days, with runny nose, sneezing, and coughing being common complaints.

The exact mechanism of transmission is not fully understood, but several factors are thought to influence the spread of rhinoviruses. Temperature and humidity play a role, with cooler temperatures and lower humidity allowing the virus to survive longer on surfaces. Strains may be more or less severe, with some causing more pronounced symptoms.

Common methods for diagnosis include PCR (polymerase chain reaction) to detect the virus's genetic material or serological tests to detect antibodies. In some cases, antibodies against recent cold viruses can be detected. Treatment often involves relieving symptoms with over-the-counter medications, rest, and hydration. A vaccine for rhinoviruses has not been widely developed, but a live attenuated vaccine was tested in the 1960s.
