Retrovirallike refers to elements within a genome that share structural or sequence similarities with retroviruses but are not necessarily infectious or capable of producing new virions. These elements are often remnants of ancient retroviral infections that have integrated into the host's DNA over evolutionary time. They can make up a significant portion of eukaryotic genomes, particularly in vertebrates.

These elements can be broadly categorized into two main types: endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) and retroviral-like sequences. ERVs are the most direct descendants of retroviral insertions, often retaining some of their original genetic structure, including long terminal repeats (LTRs) and genes for viral proteins like reverse transcriptase and integrase. However, many ERVs are truncated, mutated, or lack essential genes, rendering them replication-defective. Retroviral-like sequences, on the other hand, may only possess certain retroviral features, such as LTRs, without the complete genetic machinery of a retrovirus.

The presence of retrovirallike elements can have various impacts on host genomes. They can contribute to genomic diversity, influence gene regulation by acting as regulatory elements, or even give rise to new host genes through a process called exaptation. In some cases, they can also be associated with genomic instability or disease if they become activated in inappropriate ways.
