Retroreflekterende refers to a property of certain materials that are designed to reflect light back towards its source. This phenomenon is distinct from specular reflection, where light bounces off a surface at an angle equal to the angle of incidence, and diffuse reflection, where light is scattered in many directions. Retroreflective materials achieve this by employing a specific internal structure.

The most common type of retroreflector utilizes a structure based on corner reflectors. A corner reflector consists of three flat, mutually perpendicular surfaces. When light enters a corner reflector, it strikes each surface in turn, undergoing two reflections. Due to the geometry of the perpendicular surfaces, the light is reflected back in the direction from which it originated, regardless of the angle of incidence.

Another type of retroreflector is the beaded retroreflector. This consists of tiny glass or plastic spheres embedded in a binder. Each sphere acts like a miniature lens and reflector. Light striking the sphere is refracted, then reflected by the back surface of the sphere, and then refracted again as it exits. This combination of refraction and reflection effectively directs the light back towards the source.

Retroreflective materials are widely used in applications where visibility is crucial, especially in low-light conditions. Examples include safety clothing for road workers and cyclists, road signs, license plates, and reflective tape on vehicles. The ability of these materials to return a significant portion of incident light to the observer makes them highly effective for enhancing safety and visibility.
