Retroperitoneaal refers to the anatomical space located behind the peritoneum, the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity. This region contains various important organs and structures, including the kidneys, adrenal glands, pancreas, duodenum, ascending and descending colon, aorta, inferior vena cava, and lymph nodes. The retroperitoneum is distinct from the peritoneal cavity, which is the space within the peritoneum that encloses the stomach, liver, spleen, small intestine, and most of the large intestine.
The retroperitoneal space is a potential space, meaning that under normal circumstances, it is relatively collapsed
