Resonant detection is a technique used to identify or measure specific frequencies within a signal. It relies on the principle of resonance, where a system is excited and oscillates with greater amplitude at certain frequencies than at others. In the context of signal detection, this means that a detector tuned to a particular resonant frequency will exhibit a strong response when that frequency is present in the input signal, while remaining relatively insensitive to other frequencies.

This selective sensitivity makes resonant detection ideal for applications where the goal is to isolate a specific signal from a noisy background or to identify a particular component within a complex waveform. The core of a resonant detector is often an oscillator or a resonant circuit, such as an RLC circuit (resistor, inductor, capacitor), which has a natural frequency of oscillation. When the input signal contains frequencies close to this natural frequency, the circuit's response is amplified.

Various forms of resonant detection exist. For instance, in radio receivers, tunable resonant circuits are used to select a specific broadcast frequency. In scientific instruments, resonant detection can be employed to measure the resonant frequencies of materials, which can reveal their composition or physical properties. The precision and sensitivity of resonant detection depend on the quality factor (Q factor) of the resonant system; a higher Q factor indicates a narrower resonance peak and therefore better frequency selectivity.
