Resistanssilämmitys, or resistance heating, is a process where electrical energy is converted into thermal energy through the Joule heating effect. This occurs when an electric current flows through a resistive material, causing it to heat up. The amount of heat generated is directly proportional to the electrical resistance of the material and the square of the current flowing through it, as described by the formula P = I²R, where P is power, I is current, and R is resistance.

Various materials can be used for resistance heating, including metals like nichrome (an alloy of nickel and chromium) and tungsten, as well as non-metallic materials like silicon carbide. The choice of material depends on factors such as the required operating temperature, the environment, and the desired lifespan of the heating element.

Industrially, resistance heating is used in furnaces for metal treatment, soldering, and sterilization processes. It is also employed in electric blankets, hair dryers, and electric stoves. The simplicity of design and reliability make resistance heating a popular choice for many thermal applications. Control of the temperature can be achieved through regulating the voltage or current supplied to the heating element, often using thermostats or power controllers.
