requintos

Requntos, also known as requintos or requins, are a type of Spanish folk instrument originated from the Basque region in northern Spain. It is a variant of the cuadra or luth, a stringed instrument with a flat back, bearing some resemblance to a lute.

Typically requntos are played with the fingers, using a flat plectrum, or a pick. They have six courses of strings, providing a vibrant and rich tone. The instrument's name is thought to derive from the Basque language, where "requnto" or "reinta" means "pinch" or "press", likely referring to the method of playing it.

Instrument makers from various regions built their own versions, utilizing distinct styles, materials and craftsmanship which might result in variations of tone and playing techniques. The instrument fell out of favor in the 20th century, largely being replaced by other, more accessible instruments in popular culture.

However, efforts have been made to revive the requinto in recent years. It has found new life in the hearts of contemporary lutenists, who have discovered its unique capabilities and aesthetic value. Playing styles and techniques adapted for the requinto allow for the expression of musical genres ranging from traditional folk songs to varied baroque and modern styles.

Specialist craftspeople, luthiers and instrument makers have sought to rediscover and innovate traditional techniques to address what has been deemed a nearly extinct art. As a result, a new range of requntos has been created, all somewhat reflecting the original in design, construction or acoustic origins. Today, this revival reflects a labour of love and preservation of an heir to the mantel of musical composure.
